It seems that every major roadway in the core of Tampa is under construction these days. From the major I-275 reconfiguration to the Crosstown/I-4 connector – Tampa is starting to feel like a completely different place. There is some action being taken to improve some of the auxiliary roads as well, which includes re-paving many of the roads in and around Ybor City. Both 21st Street and 22nd Street are currently under a major transformation to return Ybor City to a more pedestrian friendly community. Another one of these roads is Columbus Drive which is the location of Design Styles headquarters.
As a part of these improvements, the East Tampa Community Development Committee is proposing to return the very busy Columbus Drive back to a two-way road as it was originally configured. It is currently one of the few remaining one-way roads in Ybor and traffic tends to speed through the neighborhood, which is not a desirable characteristic for a walkable community. Design Styles has been active in promoting this effort since 2011 when we purchased the P. Spoto building on Columbus Drive. You can see our very own Jason Dickens speaking with the local media in the video to the right about the effort. And you can find the concept images below showing the proposed changes.
