LAURA CALDERON

DESIGN ASSOCIATE III, DSA

We sat down with Laura for a snapshot of what she does on a day to day basis, the why behind her passion for architecture, and a little bit of fun along the way.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

A: My typical day is generally pretty busy, so I like to keep track with a daily task list. One thing I really enjoy about my job is that I usually have a variety of projects I’m juggling at any given time, so I may be working on the very early conceptual design of one project, while also developing final construction documents or performing construction administration tasks on another project.

Q: What do you most like about your job?

A: My favorite aspect about my role as an architectural designer, and the reason I chose this career, is the tremendous opportunity and responsibility I have of helping bring a client’s dream to life through teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking. I truly feel a sense of pride when I get to actually see and walk through a completed project that I had a hand in creating

Q: What is your favorite project to date?

A: My favorite project to date is actually a Coporate Sales Office that I’m currently working on. The client has some very creative ideas for their building aesthetic and product display, so I’ve had a lot of fun developing the drawings in response to their detailed program and overall vision.

Q: What is your favorite architectural style?

A: Postmodernism is my favorite of the contemporary architectural styles, but when it comes to ancient architecture, traditional Japanese is my absolute favorite!

Q: What do you do in your spare time?

A: In my spare time, I enjoy visiting local parks and beaches with my husband and my dog. I also love photography and lots of travelling.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: “If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.” ― Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
